On February 1, 2020, IMBiH and BHeart co-hosted \u201cAn Evening with Ajla Terzi\u0107\u201d featuring author Ajla Terzi\u0107 discussing her book <\/span>This Could Have Been a Simple Story<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>Mogla je biti prosta pri\u010da<\/span><\/i>) with journalist Inda Swanke and translator John K. Cox at Cleveland Park Public Library in Washington, DC.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A native of Travnik, Ajla\u2019s short stories, plays, essay and literary translations were published in some of the most relevant and influential literary magazines in Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia. She is also the author of a book of poetry (<\/span>Kako te\u0161ko pi\u0161em<\/span><\/i>) and another novel (<\/span>Lutrija<\/span><\/i>). <\/span>This Could Have Been a Simple Story<\/span><\/i> (first published in Bosnian in 2011 and translated to English by John K. Cox in 2017) was the finalist for the Midwest Book Award in 2018. It was also awarded by the Independent Press Award as the Best Literary\/Fiction book.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Among the topics of discussion during the talk, Ajla spoke about her inspiration for writing the book which details the life of a twenty-something woman and her experiences with patriarchy, societal expectations and love among a backdrop of ethnic antagonisms, economic decline and general societal pessimism in postwar Bosnia. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
